From Year 5 onwards pupils are taught by a specialist Design Technology teacher in purpose built accommodation. They might begin by designing, drawing and making a ball-bearing maze in plywood and timber. Hand tools are used by the children and some machining can be done by the teacher in charge. Children work at their own speed through design and make projects. Without time constraints, their designing is freed. The pupil decides how simple or how complicated a project need be. After each design they review and suggest improvements. A pupil in Year 8 might be found designing and making a pencil case with a perspex lid. The design drawings would include 3D sketches and flat drawings, either drawn by pencil or with a CAD system.
