Art
Art is an important part of life at St Andrew’s. Art enriches our lives and our environment, and we aim to find the means of unlocking the creativity of the individual through a range of experiences. Building upon the foundation subjects of drawing and painting children go on to make sculpture using wire, card and paper mache, stitch, weave and paint textiles, explore printmaking and construct using clay.
Sketchpads are fundamental to our method of working. They are used to record from observation, express feelings, provide inspiration, exercise the imagination and refine ideas.
We believe in looking outwards and offering children the opportunity to work in different environments. Full use is made of our extensive grounds, working outside and gaining inspiration from our beautiful buildings and surroundings.
Looking at the work of artists and crafts people underpins all practical work. All pupils have the opportunity to visit a London Gallery and participate in artist led workshops. Technology, on-line resources and digital photography are also used as learning tools.
Pupils in Years 3 - 8 enjoy a double lesson of art each week. We have a thriving Portfolio Club and pupils are offered the chance to attend specialist workshops held in local senior schools. More and more scholarship candidates are successful in gaining art awards at their chosen schools.
Although art is about giving expression to individual ideas we also believe it is about creating work together. Children work co-operatively to produce murals, props and scenery for school productions.
Each pupil ’s achievement is celebrated and much use is made of surfaces around the school to display work and to inspire all.
