Charitable Activity
We believe it is important that our children are taught to appreciate their own prosperity and to develop a sensitive awareness of the needs of less fortunate people. Representatives of several charities have spoken to our children in chapel services, reminding us that everything we give to others - time as well as money, makes a difference.
Our Charities Committee (staff and pupils) oversees fundraising events and the distribution of monies raised. At the request of pupils, most of its giving focuses on charities that help children.
The projects we support include:
St Peter’s School, Uganda: Before we started to work with this rural school, it was desperately deprived but now has desks, windows and staff houses and we are proud to have been associated with the school over many years.
The Grace Christian School, South Africa: The school caters for children in one of the more neglected areas of the country, many of whom are AIDS orphans. This year we are sending a group of pupils and staff there on a visit to develop this link and bring mutual encouragement. The charity that supports the school in the UK can be visited at www.fham.co.uk/
FAITH: a local Christian group in Reading which cares for the most needy sections of society, including the homeless. We donate our Harvest Thanksgiving offering to them.
Toybox: a charity rescuing, housing and helping to educate street children in Guatemala and Bolivia.
CLIC Sargent: supports children in the UK suffering from cancer. We do a sponsored ‘Readathon’ each year and give much of the money raised to this cause.
We are currently looking at sponsoring a dalit (‘untouchable’) child in India, and we do give to various other good causes as need arises. A sponsored bike ride in aid of Tsunami victims raised over £2,000 in 2005.
Money is raised through:
-
Sponsored events - Annual ‘Penny Mile Day’ where children are encouraged to save coins and build a Mile of Pennies for charity
- Home Clothes Day
- Sales and collections
- Individual donations
- FOSA (Friends of St Andrew’s) also give a proportion of their fund-raising to local charities
